Special Peal

In recent years, St Nicholas Church has hosted a special peal of ringing in the run-up to Christmas.  It didn't happen last year, but we're pleased to report that on 17th December, starting around 11:00am, we'll have a visiting band ringing a quarter peal to mark the recent St Nicholas Day and to help get us into the Christmas mood.  Do listen out for what promises to be some excellent ringing....

Help the Homeless

Dear all,  As you may know, at Harvest Festival our gifts of food usually go to the Porch centre for the homeless in Oxford.  With Christmas approaching, which can be especially hard for the homeless and vulnerably housed, The Porch is making plans to make the "festive season" as good as possible for the Members. Apart from special meals, everyone attending on the 25th will be given a present. We have been approached to ask if we might like to help with contributing towards small Christmas gifts.  If you would like to help, The Porch have provided a list, which I have copied below.  Any donations can be left in the food bank box in our church porch and I will separate these out from the foodbank items.  We will take any items donated before Christmas.  Many thanks,  Darren  Personal products (Deodorant, shower gel, shampoo/conditioner) Socks/tights Underwear (Male & Female) Scarves/hats/gloves Flasks/Water bottles Backpacks Torches (and batteries) Pac a Macs Hot water bottles  Bars of chocolate For health and safety reasons, it is very important that...

Musing on Mark – outrageous behaviour

Musing on Mark 7, 24 to the end More outrageous behaviour from our saviour! Was Jesus really so rude? This weeks reports tell of Jesus venturing north from Capernaum into the region of Tyre for a secret holiday. The people of this area were formerly bitter enemies of Israel. It seems there is nowhere he can escape from the publics’ attention, though, for He is sought out by a non-Israelite/non-Jewish woman who comes to him seeking healing for her daughter. No Jewish rabbi would allow himself to talk to any women other than a close relative let alone a woman who is 100% Gentile, a foreigner, a pagan, a worshiper of idols (Matthew describes her as a Canaanite, which is a description of her religious beliefs, not her ethnicity). Outrageous behaviour at the time. And pretty brave of the woman to approach a foreigner, a Jew, a former enemy, of a different religion, too. She must have been desperate. (So many come to...
